I finally got my own Nintendo Entertainment System! It was handed down from a friend who’d just upgraded to a Super Nintendo. I could finally play Super Mario Bros. from start to finish. Until then, I’d only gotten glimpses. A few minutes at the local store kiosk, just long enough to die in level 1. My first time? I ran straight into a Koopa. Isn’t that life though?
Sometimes I got to play at a friend’s or relative’s house, but as a polite guest, those were short stints. I never made it far. But with my own console? Game on.
When I finally got to World 4, I hated it.
Who is this guy throwing stuff at me? Why does he get a cloud? And how am I supposed to dodge all this?
But I pushed through, beat it, celebrated…
…only to hit 4-2.
Underground. No cloud guy. That felt like a win.
Until the fire came.
Little spinning rings, begging me to jump into them. And I did. Over and over.
Learning the timing.
The spacing.
The patience.
It was work. But it was fun.
Hours and hours of fun.
Struggle. Frustration. Joy. Progress. Repeat.
And honestly? That’s what stewardship feels like.
It’s hard in the moment. You fail. You try again. You learn. You grow.
You hate it.
You love it.
It costs something.
But it’s worth everything.
Stewardship is World 4.
